Location: Sydney CBD – 100% Onsite
Reports to: CEO and COO
Why This Role Exists
This is an opportunity for a smart, enthusiastic, early-career developer to build real software, on real systems, used by real clients every day, while learning to work the way modern engineering teams actually work now: grounded in solid fundamentals, accelerated by AI.
At Financial Simplicity, you won’t be hidden away or watching from the sidelines. You’ll work directly with experienced engineers, product leaders, and domain experts in wealth management – maintaining and extending the systems that run the business today, while helping shape how we build tomorrow using AI-assisted development.
This role sits deliberately at that intersection. You’ll need enough command of “traditional” software fundamentals e.g. code, databases, source control, structured delivery, to be trusted with production systems. And you’ll need real, hands-on experience actually building things with industrial-grade AI development tools – not just having used them casually but having shipped something with them.
If you’re curious, high-energy, and want to grow fast by being in the room, asking questions, and getting your hands dirty with both legacy code and next-generation tooling, this role is designed for you.
Who We Are
Financial Simplicity is reshaping personalised wealth management through technology.
Our platform enables wealth firms to deliver scalable, compliant, and highly customised portfolios at scale. We sit at the intersection of finance, data, and software – combining deep domain expertise with practical engineering to solve complex real-world problems.
We’re a small, focused team with big ambitions. We care about clarity, ownership, and shipping quality software that actually helps users, and increasingly, about using AI well to do that faster and better.
The Role
We are hiring a Software Developer to join our Sydney-based engineering team in an entry-level capacity (1–2 years experience).
This role has two connected halves:
- Legacy application development and support. Our production platform runs on established technology, structured SDLC processes, and disciplined engineering practice. You’ll work on real, business-critical code – fixing bugs, extending features, and learning what it takes to maintain systems that clients depend on every day.
- AI-first development practice. In parallel, you’ll be expected to actively bring AI tools and methods into how that work gets done using agentic, industrial-grade AI development tools like Claude Code to understand unfamiliar code faster, accelerate implementation, strengthen testing, and improve documentation. Over time, you’ll help us evolve how the team builds software, not just execute within it.
You won’t be asked to choose between “old” and “new”, you’ll be asked to bridge them. That’s the actual job.
This role is 100% onsite, in-office at our Sydney HQ. We believe close collaboration, learning by osmosis, and fast feedback are critical early in your career.
What You’ll Do
- Contribute code to our production systems under guidance from senior developers
- Support and extend existing (legacy) applications: understanding established codebases, conventions, and constraints before changing them
- Fix bugs, improve existing features, and help build new functionality across the stack: backend, frontend, and data
- Follow and learn structured SDLC process, planning, code review, testing, release discipline, and understand why it exists, not just comply with it
- Use industrial-grade AI development tools (e.g. Claude Code) as a genuine part of your daily workflow – for code comprehension, implementation, debugging, and documentation and be able to explain and justify what the AI produced, not just paste it in
- Help identify where AI-assisted approaches can improve how the team works, and bring those ideas forward
- Participate in code reviews and learn professional coding standards
- Assist with testing, debugging, and investigating production issues
- Gain exposure to system architecture, deployment, and operational thinking
- Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and continuously build understanding of the platform
Technical Skills & Experience
Core Expectations (Entry Level)
You do not need to be an expert but you should have solid fundamentals, some hands-on exposure, and real comfort working alongside AI tools rather than in place of understanding them.
- 1–2 years experience (commercial, internship, or strong personal projects)
- Working knowledge of C# and .NET fundamentals
- Basic understanding of SQL and relational databases
- Exposure to web development concepts (APIs, HTTP, frontend vs backend)
- Familiarity with Git and version control workflows
- Ability to read, understand, and modify existing (including unfamiliar/legacy) code
- Comfort using an IDE (Visual Studio or similar)
- Demonstrable, hands-on experience building something real with an industrial-grade AI coding tool such as Claude Code – a personal project, a freelance piece of work, a contribution at a previous job, or similar. You should be able to walk us through what you built, how you used the tool, and what you had to fix or push back on yourself
- Practical experience using AI coding assistants for real development tasks and be able to speak to how you used them, checked their output, and where you didn’t trust them blindly
Exposure to Our Stack (Nice to Have, Not Required)
- .NET / C#
- SQL Server
- TypeScript or JavaScript
- Web UI frameworks or libraries (React, Angular, jQuery, etc.)
- Azure or cloud fundamentals
- Basic understanding of REST APIs
- Unit testing concepts
- Prompt engineering or agentic AI-assisted development workflows (e.g. Claude Code)
AI & Learning Mindset
This is not a “nice to have” section, it’s central to the role, and it’s where we expect you to show real evidence, not just enthusiasm.
We’re not looking for someone who’s dabbled with a chatbot. We’re looking for someone who has actually built something (a project, a tool, a feature, an app) using an industrial-grade, agentic AI development tool like Claude Code, and who can talk through that experience honestly: what worked, what didn’t, where you had to intervene, and what you learned about working this way.
- Have genuinely built something end-to-end using an agentic AI coding tool such as Claude Code, not just prompted a chatbot for snippets, but used AI as a working development partner on a real piece of software
- Able to speak specifically to that experience in an interview: what you built, why you made the choices you did, and how you validated or corrected the AI’s output
- Able to critically evaluate AI-generated code and output rather than accepting it uncritically
- Curious about how tools like Claude Code reshape SDLC, testing, documentation, and delivery and keen to help the team adopt that responsibly
- Willing to use AI to learn faster, debug smarter, and ramp up on unfamiliar (including legacy) code
- Genuinely energised by being part of an AI-first future for software development, not just tolerant of it
Who You Are
You’ll thrive in this role if you are:
- Curious, inquisitive, and not afraid to ask “why?”
- High-energy, motivated, and eager to learn
- Comfortable saying “I don’t know yet, but I’ll find out”
- Strong in fundamentals and keen to deepen them – even where the technology isn’t cutting-edge
- Genuinely energised by AI-assisted development, ideally with something real you’ve built using tools like Claude Code to show for it, and want to help define how it’s done well
- Honest, accountable, and open to feedback
- Excited to build and support real systems, not just complete exercises
- Happy working onsite, collaborating closely with your team
- Someone who enjoys learning outside formal work (projects, reading, experimenting, including building things with AI tools on your own time)
What You’ll Gain
- Real production experience on a complex, business-critical platform
- Daily mentorship from experienced engineers
- Exposure to financial systems, compliance, and real-world constraints
- Strong foundations in professional software development and SDLC discipline
- Hands-on experience applying industrial-grade AI tools like Claude Code to real, production development work — building on the skills you bring, not just repeating what you already know
- A front-row seat in shaping how a team blends legacy systems with AI-first practice
- A clear growth path toward mid-level and senior engineering roles
- The confidence that comes from shipping meaningful work
